Vanderbilt Homepage Redesign

And now for something different

The focus of this blog has been the Vanderbilt homepage redesign. The input we received was so valuable that I decided to piggyback another redesign project onto it and solicit your feedback once again.

We are in the process of redesigning VUCast, which is the university’s primary news Web site. Like any other news site it has lots of information and features and is updated daily. With our move away from print media as a news tool we expect VUCast and its faculty / staff companion site myVU to play an ever-increasing role in getting university information out to the Vanderbilt community, the public and to the media.

This redesign is intended to incorporate and make better use of features and tools that have grown since the site’s launch two years ago - RSS, video, podcasts, widgets, etc. It also mimics some of the popular features from top news Web sites - that’s what the new navigation across the top is about.

One last look…

We received overwhelming support for Option 1 (not just here but in numerous emails). We’ve tweaked it a bit more…so we present, one last time, for your feedback, Option 1 of the new and (we hope) improved navigation.

Alternatives to the homepage navigation

You guys have been a vocal group, both here and at our monthly Spiders meetings, and we appreciate it; so we’re asking for your input again. Please take a look at the links below. These are two alternatives to the drop-down navigation that some people have found problematic.

Option 1 is a basic html / css pop out:

Option 2 is a “smoother” dhtml type menu:

Says our programmer, Mike Petruna:
“Both pass in most browsers (even navigator 7.1!). The dhtml and the basic menu need style tweaking  for ie 7.0 and the basic pop out needs a slight javascript to force the pop out in ie 6.0.”

So, which do you prefer? Or do you prefer the current drop downs? Or something else entirely?

Here we go…

The new site is live, as of 7:51 a.m. Wednesday Aug. 1.

We don’t expect it to be perfect right off the bat, so if you see mistakes, broken links, or general weirdness, please let us know here on the blog.

To update the look of your own site, templates and color info are available here. Updated Sitemason templates are available too.

Launch date for new homepage moved up.

We are now planning on launching the new homepage on August 1. We plan to look take a look at what we have and have a discussion about this at the Spiders meeting on July 27th.

Progress report and color information

Coding has begun on the homepage and 2nd levels. We expect to have finished pages by mid July to test and pass around to folks. Still on target for a mid-August launch.

Final homepage, new draft of a 2nd-level page

With a few more tweaks and adjustments based on your comments, we present what we think is the final draft of the homepage redesign. Speak now or forever hold your peace!

Again, taking your comments into consideration, we’ve redone the 2nd level page to more closely reflect the design and navigation of the homepage, while trying to give these pages their own look and feel. We are trying to keep the 2nd levels simple, functional and helpful, but in the most aesthetically pleasing way we can.

Almost there…

Things are moving quickly now. Take a look at these two drafts; changes were made based on your input.

Next round of changes

Based on your comments both here and at our Spiders meeting, we made some changes to the homepage redesign:

1. We moved the navigation and the news/features to the left, so they won’t be cut off on 800×600 monitors.
2. We asked for a few options for a new color scheme.
3. We changed the look of the video section.
4. We asked for more white space and more attention to the “Vanderbilt University” banner.
