It looks like the future of Virtualization has made for new and creative ways of keeping up with the physical demand for equipment and space. It’s hard to imaging moving a whole truckload of servers so seemlessly that the end users never notice the change. In a world where necessity has been the mother of invention, implementation is still key. Let’s see how MSFT pulls this one off.

We no longer have to use transportation to get together with like-minded people. Whether job hunting, finding former classmates, pursuing some esoteric interest, or just wanting to kill time, there is a Social Network Service to suit you. You don’t even have to get up from your chair, which is either a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it.
Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, Classmates.com — the list goes on and on. Networks can be general, such as Facebook and MySpace, or more targeted, such as those networks for specific ethnic and religious groups.
Many of the services have no charge associated with them.

It’s possible with portable eReaders. For those of us who grew up lugging 50 lbs. of textbooks in our weighted-down backups, the prospect of downsizing to gadgets weighing mere ounces is alluring. That having been said, as one who now must reach for glasses to see anything smaller than my coffee cup, having a “big” book may not be such a bad idea after all.
Regardless of your perspective, taking a look at eReaders is worth your time. In addition to allowing you to carry multiple books in a single space-efficient device, you can procure books as easily as you download music. Many of these books are not just an electronic duplication of your favorite printed copy, but rather incorporate rich media such as audio, video, and simulations. That, coupled with the ability to highlight text and add notes, can make for a richer learning experience in the textbook arena.

Over the last several months, there has been an increase in the use of Vanderbilt’s Video Conferencing Bridge. Some conferences are meetings between on-campus participants trying to save time from cross-campus treks, and avoid headaches caused by traversing through construction zones. Others have been students interviewing for jobs when travel by recruiters was impractical. Some have been all-day sessions conducted between researchers from coast-to-coast as they prepare for a scientific conference. And, others have been discussions between scholars around the world.
The advantages are obvious — Save Time; Save Money, whenever and wherever you please. If you add recording to the mix, then you get an added bonus — a media file that can be played back at a later date.
While some departments will elect to purchase high quality cameras and codecs, individuals can avail themselves of these services with an inexpensive webcam and codec software.
See http://its.vanderbilt.edu/services/videobridge for information about video conferencing services at Vanderbilt.
